The question

What carries a worktop that is not a rectangle?

The top curves away from the sitter and rises into a low screen at the back, so the working surface is widest where the hands are and narrows where it meets the neighbouring pedestal.

That shape asks a different question of the support. Instead of four legs, a single perforated column stands on a curved foot, set inboard so the knees find nothing in their way.

Made to be made

An ordinary board, used precisely.

The worktop is standard melamine-faced board from Finsa — an industry material, chosen because it could be cut, edged and repeated at volume without a special process. The design earns its character from the curve and the single support, not from an expensive surface.

The perforated aluminium column and the cast foot carry that top on their own. Because the column stands inboard of the front edge, the legroom is uninterrupted and two workstations can be set back to back without their supports meeting.

How it is built

Curved worktop
Melamine-faced board with a wider working zone at the front edge, tapering towards the return.
Back screen
A low raised panel following the same curve, giving the desk a front and a back.
Perforated column
A single flat aluminium column carrying the top, with the perforation reading as texture rather than decoration.
Cast foot
A curved cast foot spreading the load and setting the stance.
Pedestal
A four-drawer unit aligned to the narrow end, keeping storage off the surface.
Produced for
SAG Systems, who brought the workstation to market in Iberia and kept it in production from 2007 to 2013.

A single support has to earn the whole surface above it.
